New Jersey woman charged with drunk driving

A woman believed to have been drunk behind the wheel is in custody after rear-ending a police cruiser and injuring an officer, according to local sources. New Jersey police in Ringwood confirmed the accident took place the evening of Oct. 13. A 55-year-old woman is in custody under suspicion of drunk driving, though no court date has been announced at this time.

According to the report, the woman was observed traveling at a high rate of speed around 7:20 p.m. when she reportedly crashed into the back of a police cruiser. The force of the impact totaled the cruiser and injured the officer driving it. The officer was taken to a local hospital and treated for knee and neck injuries of unknown severity. The Oakland woman was not injured in the crash.

It is not clear how police came to the belief that the woman was drunk at the time of the accident, as no mention of a roadside sobriety test was made. However, she has officially been charged with drunk driving and assault by auto. If she is found guilty, she could face prison time as well as the loss of her license.

However, drunk driving cases are not always easy to prosecute. The nature of alcohol's effect on the human body can muddle results of blood or breath testing. It will be up to New Jersey prosecutors to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the woman was intoxicated at the time of the crash, while her defense representation will carefully review the facts of the case as part of building her defense. If her rights were not observed during the investigation and subsequent arrest, the charges could be lowered or thrown out altogether.
